There are 3 ladybugs on a leaf. There is 1 ladybug on the other leaf. How many ladybugs are there altogether?
3 + 1 = 4 three plus one equals four There are 4 ladybugs altogether. |
Mark has four balloons. Kate has 3 balloons. How many balloons do they have altogether?
4 + 3 = 7 four plus three equals seven They have 7 balloons altogether. |
Here are some examples of subtraction stories:
There were 5 apples. Steven ate 2 of the apples. How many apples were left?
5 - 2 = 3 five minus two equals three There are 3 apples left. |
There were 10 apples on the tree. 6 apples fell down. How many apples are left on the tree?

Students will also use concrete items to tell a math story or find an answer.
Nathan had 6 hearts. Lisa added 4 more hearts. How many hearts were there altogether?
